BIC is an industry-academia collaboration program that selects outstanding research projects from universities and research institutes, provides research funding, and involves LG Energy Solution researchers in joint research. All universities and research institutes in Korea and abroad are eligible to participate.

Marking the program's 10th anniversary this year, LG Energy Solution has expanded the range of research topics to its largest ever. Key areas include technologies for diagnosing battery cell conditions and identifying mechanisms to improve safety, spanning materials, cells, battery management systems (BMS), and artificial intelligence (AI). Projects will be selected for support based on assessments of their technological maturity, commercialization potential, and other factors.

Since 2017, LG Energy Solution has supported around 50 research projects through BIC. Projects with proven results are expanded into joint research centers (FRLs) operated with universities and research institutes in Korea and abroad, where they receive additional research funding and personnel. Last year, the program achieved results including filing patent applications for physical models to improve BMS computing speed.

Kim Jeyoung, chief technology officer (CTO) of LG Energy Solution, said, "We expect that industry and academia can drive innovation in the battery industry by working together," adding, "We will accelerate our growth based on our differentiated technological competitiveness."
