"Craftsmanship perfected through technology"... 'GV90' sets a new standard for luxury cars.
Genesis Reveals Development Process at GV90 Tech Day
Hidden B-Pillar and Roll-Cage Structure Ensure Rigidity
1,400-mm Roof Airbag Deploys in 0.08 Seconds
Genesis has revealed the story behind the development of key technologies in its new flagship luxury sport utility vehicle (SUV), the GV90. To create the Neolun Arch Gate, whose front and rear doors open in opposite directions like coach doors, the company spent more than seven years developing the vehicle body. It also conducted crash tests on more than 40 production vehicles to verify the safety of a structure that hides the pillar between the front and rear doors (the B-pillar), bringing to life “craftsmanship perfected through technology.”

The GV90 features a range of new technologies, including the world’s first independently opening Neolun Arch Gate and a roof airbag; a “hidden roll cage” structure designed to enhance safety; the flagship-only eMP platform; and “Wing Face MLA Headlamps” that wrap around the front of the vehicle.
Huh Kwanghoon, executive director in charge of Genesis development, said, “The core concept for developing the GV90 emerged around 2019, and we have been working to realize it technologically ever since. We are proud to have reached our goal of setting a new standard for global luxury.”

The key challenge was to create ample space for getting in and out of the vehicle while maintaining body rigidity. The Neolun Arch Gate was made possible by combining a dual-motion hinge and latch, which allow the front and rear doors to open independently, with a hidden B-pillar structure.
The dual-motion hinge pushes the rear door outward and then rotates it, allowing it to open even when the front door is closed. “To achieve the two movements of swinging and sliding, we looked everywhere from mechanics textbooks to furniture fairs,” said Nam Jinwoo, a team lead on Genesis’ Closure Design Team. “We got the idea from linear motion guides used in industrial robots and developed a way to open a door weighing 70 kg smoothly.”
The latch not only opens and closes the door but also supports impact in a collision in place of the B-pillar. Genesis also took inspiration from the roll cages used in race cars to create a hidden roll-cage structure in the body frame and inside the doors. As a result, the GV90 can withstand a load of more than 14 tons in the company’s roof-crush test, making it one of the strongest production vehicles in its class. This compares with around 10 tons for mass-produced vehicles.
The development of the roof airbag was based on traffic accident data analysis. “Vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-fixed-object collisions are the most common types of accidents, followed by rollovers. However, rollovers account for the greatest number of injuries,” said Son Yuji, a principal researcher on the Passenger Safety System Design Team. “That is why we developed the roof airbag.”
The 1,400 mm-long roof airbag deploys along the vehicle’s ceiling in just 0.08 seconds, unlike conventional airbags. Because it must be secured to the ceiling, Genesis developed a new spring housing structure and wire guides. The company also established the airbag’s reliability through tests including rollover tests in which the vehicle rotated more than 180 degrees, as well as crash tests on more than 40 production vehicles.

After painting the outside of the lamps the same color as the body, Genesis used lasers to precisely remove the paint only from the areas where light shines through. The company developed dedicated paint and coating materials for this process.
The lamps also use Micro Lens Array (MLA) technology, which applies semiconductor manufacturing processes to create ultra-small lenses. They are designed so that the lenses and housing can be separated, allowing only the damaged parts to be replaced in the event of an accident.
The interior uses natural materials such as natural stone, wood and wool cashmere. Genesis also created a separate physical sample book to ensure that all materials were produced to the same standards, taking into account the durability, wear resistance and design requirements of a vehicle.
“We tested the durability of the rear-seat wood floor through experiments that simulated a range of everyday conditions, including people getting in and out of the vehicle wearing golf shoes with spikes,” said Nam Taekseong, head of Genesis’ CMF (Color, Material and Finish) Team. “We focused on preserving the natural beauty of the materials while ensuring they meet the durability requirements of a flagship model.”

Genesis moved the integrated charging control unit (ICCU), previously located under the vehicle floor, and the climate control system, previously inside the dashboard, toward the front to create more interior space. Aluminum lightweight materials make up 72% of the vehicle body, reducing weight while delivering world-class rigidity and crash performance.
To achieve both powerful driving performance and a comfortable ride, the GV90 is equipped with a multi-chamber air suspension and a high-performance monotube dual-valve electronically controlled shock absorber, which Hyundai Motor Group has introduced in a mass-produced vehicle for the first time. High-speed driving evaluations at speeds of up to 240 km/h in locations including California, U.S., and Germany’s Autobahn also helped reduce road noise entering the cabin.

Genesis has secured domestic and international patents for these new technologies featured in the GV90, making them difficult for competitors to replicate. “Just as a master artisan devotes a long time to shaping a moon jar, the GV90 embodies the time and effort of countless developers,” said Ahn Sejin, executive director of Genesis Project Office 2. “It is the result of the most modern craftsmanship, perfected through technology, delivering an entirely new experience through innovation.”
