View original imageFueled by the global semiconductor boom, SK hynix posted operating profit of 83.3338 trillion won in the third quarter of this year. Revenue also surpassed 100 trillion won for the first time ever. The company also announced an additional 60 trillion won in shareholder returns, saying it would pursue total shareholder returns of 100 trillion won this year. These are dazzling results and a decisive move to enhance shareholder value.
However, SK hynix's share price is telling a very different story. It rebounded this morning, the 28th, but remains down more than 50% from its June peak. The sluggish share price reflects concerns that record-high earnings could signal a peak in the semiconductor cycle. This is also a question facing the entire Korean semiconductor industry, including Samsung Electronics.
There are many sources of uncertainty. The current boom depends heavily on AI investments by U.S. big tech companies. There is also a risk that results could be swayed by the purchasing strategies of a small number of major customers, such as Nvidia. It is uncertain whether high memory prices will hold and whether expanded production facilities could once again lead to oversupply. A key question is whether SK hynix can maintain its technological edge in next-generation high-bandwidth memory (HBM) as competitors catch up. The company must also be assessed on whether it can maintain financial stability while pursuing large-scale capital investments and shareholder returns.
Ultimately, how the company uses the money it is earning now is crucial. It should expand not only its own technology development but also joint research and development with partners in materials, components, and equipment, and ensure that the results are fairly rewarded. Strengthening its partners' technological capabilities will also bolster the competitiveness of the Korean semiconductor industry as a whole. Fair compensation for key technical personnel is likewise an investment in the future.

Large-scale shareholder returns deserve recognition, but they alone will not ease market concerns. SK hynix needs to explain to the market how much stable demand it has secured through long-term supply contracts, and whether it has sufficient capacity and plans to sustain investment even if the boom subsides. No one can say for certain when the share price will recover its peak. What matters is giving investors confidence that today's enormous profits can be turned into sustainable competitiveness.
