DB Insurance Accelerates Global Expansion with U.S. Insurer Acquisition
Completed $1.65 Billion Acquisition of U.S. Insurer Fortegra
First Korean Insurer to Gain Control of a U.S.-Based Insurer
Expands Business Platform in U.S. and Europe, Strengthens Specialty Insurance Competitiveness
DB Insurance is accelerating the expansion of its global insurance business by acquiring U.S.-based specialty insurer Fortegra. It has become the first Korean insurer to gain control of a U.S. insurer, establishing a business platform spanning the United States and Europe and expanding into specialty insurance. The deal is expected to strengthen its strategy of overcoming the limits to growth in Korea’s insurance market by developing overseas markets as a new growth engine.
According to the insurance industry on October 28, DB Insurance signed an agreement in September 2025 to acquire a 100% stake in U.S. specialty insurer Fortegra for $1.65 billion and completed the acquisition in May 2026. It is the first acquisition of a U.S.-based insurer by a Korean insurer and the largest merger and acquisition (M&A) deal in Korea’s insurance industry.
In response to the limits to growth in Korea’s insurance market, DB Insurance has designated overseas markets as a key pillar of its future and steadily expanded its global business platform. After entering the U.S. market with the opening of a Guam branch in 1984, the company drew on its accumulated overseas business experience to make the strategic decision to acquire a local insurer.
Founded in 1978, Fortegra is a global insurance group headquartered in Jacksonville, Florida. It has a diverse business portfolio that includes specialty insurance, credit and surety insurance, and insurance-related services. In particular, it has built a stable earnings structure based on its expertise in underwriting and risk management. As of the end of 2025, its annual premiums totaled approximately $3.35 billion, and its net income was approximately $160 million. The company operates throughout the United States and in 10 European countries, including the United Kingdom and Italy.
The acquisition is seen as giving DB Insurance a platform for insurance operations in the United States and Europe, while also building expertise in specialty insurance that differentiates it from its existing businesses.
DB Insurance previously designated the United States, China, and Southeast Asia as its three key regions and has built its global business platform with a long-term perspective. In Vietnam in particular, it has steadily expanded its business through acquisitions of local insurers. In 2024, it acquired stakes in Vietnam National Aviation Insurance (VNI) and Saigon-Hanoi Insurance (BSH), giving it a presence in three of Vietnam’s top 10 non-life insurers.
