Fourth Anniversary Memorial Ceremony for the October 29 Itaewon Disaster to Be Held at Gwanghwamun Square on Oct. 29
The Ministry of the Interior and Safety will hold a joint memorial ceremony at Gwanghwamun Square with the victims' families, civil society groups and the Seoul Metropolitan Government to mark the fourth anniversary of the October 29 Itaewon Disaster.
The ministry said it will hold the “Fourth Anniversary Memorial Ceremony” jointly with the Families' Association of the October 29 Itaewon Disaster, the Citizens' Countermeasures Meeting for the October 29 Itaewon Disaster and the Seoul Metropolitan Government at 10:29 a.m. on October 29 at Gwanghwamun Square in Seoul.
About 1,000 people are expected to attend, including government representatives, leaders of ruling and opposition parties, members of the National Assembly, members of the diplomatic corps in South Korea, civic group representatives and members of the public who registered in advance through the website.
The ceremony will begin at 10:29 a.m., the time symbolizing when the disaster occurred, with a moment of silence for the victims. It will then proceed with a memorial address by a government representative, remarks by a representative of the victims' families and a screening of a video highlighting efforts to uncover the truth about the disaster and solidarity between the state and citizens.
In particular, a representative of the 35 family members of foreign victims who have traveled to South Korea for the memorial will speak on stage. Novelist Bora Chung will also read “A Letter of Remembrance” to express condolences.
The ceremony will continue with singer Ali performing a song in tribute and victims' families and citizens reading the “Fourth Anniversary Pledge.” The Seoul Metropolitan Musical Theater Company is scheduled to close the event with a chorus performance of “You Will Be Found.”
The memorial ceremony is being held as the Special Investigation Commission's term has been extended. It honors the 160 victims and expresses the nation's resolve to make the lessons of the disaster a foundation for public safety, the government's top priority.
