[New York Stock Market] Anthropic IPO filing lifts AI investor sentiment; all indexes close higher
Saudi and other officials visit Iran; oil prices edge lower
Gold prices rebound as inflation concerns ease
All three major U.S. stock indexes ended higher on October 26 (local time). The gains came as investor appetite for risk assets, including AI stocks, grew after Anthropic, the operator of generative AI chatbot Claude, filed IPO paperwork with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and confirmed plans to list on the Nasdaq around mid-November.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 146.42 points, or 0.28%, from the previous session to close at 52,361.58. The S&P 500 gained 53.09 points, or 0.70%, to 7,676.77, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite rose 214.03 points, or 0.83%, to finish at 26,169.38.
Buying centered on AI-related stocks flowed into the market after news that Anthropic had filed its IPO registration statement. According to the filing, Anthropic plans to list on the Nasdaq under the ticker symbol "ANT." The specific timing has not been disclosed, but the company is expected to complete its listing around Thanksgiving in November.
Anthropic generated $16.29 billion in revenue in the first half of this year, a 1,304% surge from the same period a year earlier. Its listing is drawing attention as a test of demand for AI investments and how the market values the sector.
Semiconductor stocks also ended higher. Gains were particularly strong for Nvidia, up 2.39%; Micron Technology, up 2.98%; Broadcom, up 2.33%; AMD, up 2.80%; Intel, up 4.04%; and SK hynix ADRs, up 4.09%.
Meta also drew market attention after saying it was seeking to raise up to $95 billion to fund its AI investments. Meanwhile, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk said over the weekend that he had completed a $40 billion deal to secure AI chips.
Jay Woods, chief market strategist at Freedom Capital Markets, said Anthropic's IPO filing had helped boost confidence in the market and forecast strong investor demand.
However, concerns surrounding AI investment have not been resolved. The market remains focused on whether companies can afford the enormous costs of building data centers and expanding computing infrastructure, and whether the scale of investment will translate into actual profits.
International oil prices edged lower on hopes that tensions in the Middle East could ease. Prices fell after reports that senior officials from Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Türkiye, which have a mutual defense pact, visited Tehran, Iran, and met with senior officials, including President Masoud Pezeshkian. The meeting between Saudi Arabia and Iran was their first since July, when military clashes intensified between Saudi Arabia and Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi rebels.
On the New York Mercantile Exchange, West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude for December delivery settled at $101.76 a barrel, down 1.46% from the previous session. On the ICE Futures Exchange, Brent crude for December delivery closed at $115.81 a barrel, down 0.78% from the previous session.
Gold prices rebounded, supported by easing inflation concerns following the decline in oil prices and bargain buying. Gold futures for December delivery settled at $4,038.40, up 0.8%.

Meanwhile, investors are watching the Federal Reserve's interest rate decision on October 28 and the U.S. personal consumption expenditures (PCE) price index, due to be released on October 29. Higher interest rates can weigh on gold prices by increasing the opportunity cost of holding the non-interest-bearing metal.
