Amid Improving North Korea-China Ties, Possible Mediation of North Korea-U.S. Talks Also Draws Attention
Before North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's surprise visit to China, traffic controls and restrictions on hotel reservations were reportedly imposed in Dandong, Liaoning Province, a Chinese city on the border with North Korea. With the 76th anniversary of China's entry into the Korean War just one day away, attention is focused on whether Kim will attend related events in person.
Kyodo News reported on October 24, citing diplomatic sources, that strict traffic controls had been imposed around the New Yalu River Bridge, which connects Dandong with Sinuiju in North Korea's North Pyongan Province, and that reservations at some hotels had been restricted. The controls were observed near the New Yalu River Bridge and a museum displaying China's history of involvement in the Korean War.
While some observers believe the measures were taken in preparation for a visit by a senior North Korean official, South Korea's Ministry of Unification said that day that Kim had arrived in Dandong, Liaoning Province, via the New Yalu River Bridge.
Kyodo News noted that October 25 marks the 76th anniversary of China sending troops to North Korea and entering the Korean War. Analysts say a senior North Korean official may visit China to attend related commemorative events. Whether Kim himself will attend is also drawing attention.
The New Yalu River Bridge, which Kim used to enter China, is a four-lane bridge spanning 3,026 meters and linking Dandong, the largest trade hub between North Korea and China, with Sinuiju. It was completed in 2014, but its opening was delayed due to incomplete connecting roads and customs facilities on the North Korean side, among other issues. It officially opened on October 15.
The visit to China is also drawing attention for its diplomatic significance amid recent signs of improving relations between North Korea and China. Kyodo News analyzed that Chinese President Xi Jinping's visit to North Korea in June, his first in seven years, and his meeting with Kim, during which he did not mention denuclearization, helped support the improvement in relations between the two countries.

Attention is also focused on whether the visit will affect relations between North Korea and the United States. Kyodo News reported that Kim has left the door open to dialogue on the conditions that the United States end its hostile policy toward North Korea and recognize it as a nuclear-armed state. The news agency also highlighted the possibility that China could mediate a summit between North Korea and the United States.
