Under a long-term partnership between Hyundai Card and MoMA, the same works are presented simultaneously in Seoul and New York.
Jakob Kudsk Steensen has garnered global attention for his immersive environmental storytelling works exploring nature and psychology. He presents a distinctive artistic world that blurs the boundaries between reality and the virtual through digital technologies such as 3D animation, immersive video and sound.
This exhibition will feature “Berl-Berl,” one of the artist’s best-known works, as a standalone piece. Using digital technology, the work reimagines the wetlands of Berlin, Germany, which disappeared as a result of development, as a “singing virtual swamp.” The title comes from a Slavic word meaning “swamp” and is also the origin of the name Berlin.
Through “Berl-Berl,” Steensen brings a living natural environment into the digital world, encouraging viewers to move beyond the limits of everyday experience and recognize ecological relationships. The artist said, “For me, technology is a means of connection, a medium.”
A Hyundai Card representative said, “We expect visitors to have an experience of contemplating the relationship between humans and nature from a new perspective, drawing on their memories, emotions and imagination as they encounter natural environments reborn through digital technology.”
