Arrest Warrant Sought for Daughter in Her 40s Over 'Mother's Murder'; She Denies the Crime in Police Questioning
Suspect Called Police Herself; Granddaughter Also Filed a Report
Police have sought an arrest warrant for a woman in her 40s suspected of killing her biological mother in Seoul’s Gangseo District.
The Seoul Gangseo Police Station said on October 23 that it had sought an arrest warrant for a woman in her mid-40s on suspicion of murdering a lineal ascendant.
According to police, the woman is suspected of killing her biological mother, who was in her late 60s, at their home in Ujangsan-dong, Gangseo District, Seoul, at around 8 a.m. on October 22. The woman reportedly contacted police herself at the time, but has denied the crime during questioning.
Police confirmed that the woman herself made the first report. At around 8:15 a.m., she called police and said, “I did something bad to my stepmother.” Police arrested her at the scene at around 8:40 a.m. Investigators believe only the woman and the victim were in the home at the time of the crime.
The woman’s daughter, who was elsewhere, and the victim’s granddaughter also called police to report that “Mom is saying strange things. Grandma isn’t answering the phone.” During a call with her daughter, the woman reportedly said that her mother had tried to feed her food containing poison. However, police have found no evidence of poison so far.
The woman initially referred to the victim as her “stepmother,” leading investigators to believe the victim was her stepmother. However, police determined during their investigation that the two were biological mother and daughter. Police initially charged the woman with murder when they arrested her, but changed the charge to murder of a lineal ascendant when they sought the arrest warrant.
Police found no evidence of financial problems or a grudge between the mother and daughter. However, the woman reportedly had previously shown negative feelings toward the victim, including telling her to leave the house and swearing at her.
Four family members lived in the home where the incident occurred. Police suspect the woman used a weapon in the crime. The exact cause of death will be determined through an autopsy and other procedures.
