'Canopy' Appears in Gyeonggi Library Plaza... 1,000 Hand-Knitted Pieces Joined for First Anniversary
A total of 1,000 pieces of hand-knitted fabric made by citizens across the country to celebrate the first anniversary of Gyeonggi Library’s opening have been joined to create a large canopy, which has been installed in the library plaza.
Gyeonggi Province said on October 22 that it had installed a hand-knitted canopy measuring 15 meters by 15 meters in Dodamteul Plaza on October 19. Created through the “We’ll Lend You Some Shade” project, the canopy will serve as an outdoor reading zone through October 25.
The “We’ll Lend You Some Shade” project is Gyeonggi Library’s reinterpretation of a hand-knitted shade project launched in Spain to address the climate crisis.
Gyeonggi Library held knitting workshops based on 871 balls of yarn donated in July and August. In October, 1,000 pieces of fabric handmade by knitting communities and citizens across the country were brought to the library. The pieces were joined to form a large canopy, giving citizens a shady place to enjoy reading.

The yarn used to make the fabric was donated by Nakyang Mosa, a company that collaborated on the project, and by citizens.
Along with installing the canopy, Gyeonggi Library is presenting “Borrowed Hands,” a photo exhibition documenting the participants’ work and the project’s progress from preparation and production through installation.

Yoon Myeonghui, director of Gyeonggi Library, said, “The 1,000 pieces of shade represent the care that each resident has lent to one another, as well as a record of climate action. I hope this project will show that climate action does not have to be grandiose, and that people can take part together by doing what they love.”
