"Beyond Electricity to Heat"... Seoul Future Energy Forum to Be Held on the 28th
Discussing Challenges in the Transition to Distributed Energy, Thermal Energy, and Buildings
A forum will be held to broaden discussions on Seoul’s energy transition beyond electricity to include thermal energy and buildings.
Seoul Energy Corporation, led by President Hwang Boyeon, announced on October 21 that it will host the “2026 Seoul Future Energy Forum” with the Seoul Metropolitan Government on October 28 at Gloria Hall in the Koreana Hotel in Jongno-gu. The subtitle is “From Electricity to Heat: A New Transition in Urban Energy.” Energy experts, policymakers, and industry representatives will discuss practical measures to connect policy, technology, and industry.
Park Jongbae, a professor at Konkuk University, will deliver the keynote address. He will assess Seoul’s low electricity self-sufficiency rate and its reliance on transmission networks. He will then present strategies for turning Seoul into an energy-independent city through AI-based energy efficiency improvements and the expansion of distributed energy resources.
Yoon Jaeho, a professor at the Korea Institute of Energy Technology, will deliver a presentation on the development of energy supply and trading systems amid the expansion of distributed energy resources and changes in the electricity market. Oh Sesin, a researcher at the Korea Energy Economics Institute, will present ways to use thermal energy, including heat pumps, unused heat, and district heating, as well as institutional reforms needed for decarbonization. Won Jongyeon, CEO of Ned, will outline approaches to the energy transition that extend from buildings to entire cities, drawing on the expansion of zero-energy buildings, green remodeling, and examples of cities specializing in zero-energy development.
A panel discussion on “Transitioning to Thermal Energy for Urban Decarbonization” will be moderated by Ahn Younghwan, a professor at Sookmyung Women’s University. Participants will include Lee Soyeon, director of the Green Energy Division at the Seoul Metropolitan Government’s Climate and Environment Headquarters; Choi Seongwoo, head of the Renewable Energy Division at Seoul Energy Corporation; Yoo Jungmin, a researcher at the Seoul Institute; Lee Gwangho, a professor and member of the Korean Society of Geothermal and Hydrothermal Energy; and Hong Heegi, a professor and member of the Korea Mechanical Construction Contractors Association.
Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics will also take part in discussions on institutional improvements and the use of technology to expand renewable heat deployment, as well as public-private cooperation initiatives.
