From Presidential Assassinations to Plane Crashes... The Kennedy Family's Tragedies Revisited After RFK's Granddaughter Dies
Educator Kyle Kennedy Dies at 42
Tragic Deaths Across Generations
The belated news has emerged that Kyle Kennedy, a granddaughter of former U.S. Senator Robert F. Kennedy (RFK), has died at the age of 42. She had spoken out for the rights of people with disabilities after suffering a severe spinal cord injury and leaves behind two sons, aged 12 and 10. The latest tragedy to strike the Kennedys, one of America’s most prominent political families, has once again drawn attention to the tragedies that have affected the family across generations.
On October 20 (local time), the Associated Press and other international media reported that Kyle Kennedy had died on September 21 at her home in Westwood, Massachusetts. Her obituary, written by her family and released through a funeral home, said she passed away peacefully. Her cause of death was not disclosed. Kyle was the niece of Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Secretary of Health and Human Services in The Trump Administration.
Born in Washington, D.C., in 1984, Kyle grew up in Massachusetts. After majoring in history at Georgetown University, she earned master’s degrees in education from Pace University and the Harvard Graduate School of Education. After college, she joined the education nonprofit Teach For America and taught at a public school in New York. She later continued working to expand educational opportunities for children from disadvantaged backgrounds and improve school curricula.
An avid long-distance runner, she completed the 2019 Boston Marathon. The following year, however, she suffered a severe spinal cord injury that left her paralyzed for an extended period and caused multiple health problems. She went on to advocate for the rights of people with disabilities and testified before the Massachusetts legislature about discrimination in health care against people with disabilities. A direct connection between her spinal cord injury and her death has not been established. Her survivors include her sons, Connor, 12, and Declan, 10, as well as her mother and siblings. Her obituary said that even through difficult times, Kyle maintained her characteristic wit and determination and strived to be the best mother she could be to her two sons. Her funeral was held privately.
Kyle lost her father in an accident when she was a child. Her father, Michael Kennedy, was the sixth child of RFK and Ethel Kennedy. He died in a skiing accident in Colorado on December 31, 1997. Michael was 39, and Kyle was 13 at the time. David Kennedy, RFK’s fourth child, had died earlier, in 1984, of a drug overdose.
The ‘Kennedy family curse’ in the wake of Kyle’s death
The Kennedy family has left a significant mark on modern U.S. political history, producing a president, an attorney general and senators, among others. Former President John F. Kennedy (JFK) and his younger brother RFK are among its best-known members. RFK served as attorney general in his brother’s administration before representing New York in the U.S. Senate. He and his wife, Ethel, had 11 children.
But the family’s political success was accompanied by a succession of deaths and accidents. JFK’s older brother, Joseph Kennedy Jr., died at the age of 29 while on a military mission during World War II in 1944. His younger sister, Kathleen Kennedy, also died in a plane crash in France in 1948, at the age of 28.
The assassinations of the Kennedy brothers were among the events that most deeply shocked American society. JFK was shot and killed during a motorcade in Dallas, Texas, in November 1963. About five years later, RFK was shot in Los Angeles while seeking the Democratic presidential nomination. He was shot on June 5, 1968, after winning the California primary, and died the following day.

Kennedy Jr., died at the age of 38 in July 1999 when the small plane he was piloting crashed into the sea near Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts. His wife, Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, and his sister-in-law, Lauren Bessette, who were also on board, were killed as well. In 2019, Saoirse Kennedy Hill, a granddaughter of RFK, died at the age of 22 from an accidental drug overdose.
In April 2020, another granddaughter, Maeve Kennedy Townsend McKean, and her son, Gideon, died in a canoe accident in Chesapeake Bay, Maryland. Maeve was 40, and Gideon was 8. On December 30, 2025, environmental journalist Tatiana Schlossberg, JFK’s granddaughter and daughter of Caroline Kennedy, died at the age of 35. She had been battling acute myeloid leukemia after being diagnosed shortly after giving birth to her second child in 2024.

As family members across generations have died young from assassinations, accidents and illnesses, the phrase “Kennedy family curse” has come to describe the tragedies that have repeatedly befallen the family. Kyle, who died most recently, will be remembered not only as a member of a prominent political family but also as an educator who taught children and advocated for people with disabilities to have access to health care, and as a mother of two sons.
