Suwon City Develops Standard Design for "Event Venue Signage for Everyone," Including Older Adults and People with Disabilities
Suwon City in Gyeonggi Province has developed a standard design and manual for “Event Venue Signage for Everyone,” designed to be easily understood by anyone.
The manual was designed to help a wide range of visitors, including older adults, people with disabilities, children and foreign visitors, easily and accurately understand information and enjoy events and festivals, even at temporarily constructed venues.
The standard design comprises six basic types—general information, event information, directional guidance, safety, operational facilities and wayfinding—and six specialized types. It sets standards for conveying information through text, color, brightness contrast and pictograms, and can be adapted to the characteristics of each venue and its installation conditions.
It also includes instructions on creating maps that show slopes and accessible routes, as well as standards for Braille and audio guidance using QR codes for visitors who have difficulty accessing visual information.
In addition, it features pictograms for facilities needed by a wide range of visitors, including adult diaper-changing tables, multipurpose footstools and children's restrooms.
The manual also includes a Korean-English glossary of standard terms and a practical, step-by-step checklist. The checklist has three stages: reviewing design drafts before commissioning, checking installation specifications and potential safety and pedestrian-flow issues, and conducting daily inspections during operation. It can be used throughout production, installation and operation.
Last March, the Culture and Arts Division and the Urban Design Division provided training on using “Event Venue Signage for Everyone” for staff responsible for events and shared the role of signage and how it can be used.
Suwon City's Urban Design Division plans to provide design consultations on event venue signage based on the manual to departments that request them.
During event preparations, the division will help review the organization of signage information, accessibility considerations and installation locations. It will also provide design consulting and the original files for the pictograms it developed, helping ensure they can be used at festivals and events.
