National Museum of Women's History to Open in Sejong in 2031
The National Museum of Women's History, a multi-purpose cultural facility that discovers and researches women's history and offers exhibitions and educational content, will open in Sejong City in 2031.
On October 19, the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family said it will sign a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the National Agency for Administrative City Construction and Sejong Special Self-Governing City on October 21 at the agency's main conference room in Sejong City to build the National Museum of Women's History.
The National Museum of Women's History is planned for a 3,000-square-meter site around 643 Eojin-dong, Sejong City. It will have one basement level and four floors above ground.
The museum will include facilities such as permanent and special exhibition galleries and collection storage areas to systematically preserve and exhibit artifacts related to women's history. It will also carry out a range of functions to promote a culture of gender equality, including uncovering and shedding new light on previously little-known aspects of women's history and on women figures through educational and research activities and experiential programs.
The Ministry of Gender Equality and Family plans to complete the purchase of the site by the end of 2026, begin construction after completing design work and consultations with relevant organizations starting in 2027, and officially open the museum in 2031.
Under the agreement, the National Agency for Administrative City Construction will support urban planning procedures, including land subdivision and changes to land use, as well as the provision of the site. Sejong City will support administrative procedures, such as building permits, and cooperate in running exhibition and arts and cultural programs linked to local cultural facilities.
Once the National Museum of Women's History is built, it is expected to offer a range of exhibition, educational, and cultural programs in collaboration with nearby facilities, including the Sejong City National Children's Museum; the National Museum of Urban Architecture, National Design Museum, and National Archives Museum, which are being established as part of the National Museum Complex; the Presidential Archives; the National Library; and the National Symbol District.
