Yangju City Installs Road Heating Cables for the First Time
Expands Automatic Brine Spraying Systems to 15 Locations

Yangju City in Gyeonggi Province has installed road heating cables for the first time on two mountain pass stretches that are prone to icing in winter. The city is also expanding its automatic brine spraying systems to strengthen its initial response before snowplows arrive.

Yangju City said on Oct. 19 that it had completed installing a snow-melting system (road heating cables) along about 250 meters of Genemi Pass in Yeongok-ri, Baekseok-eup, and about 300 meters of Kkachi Pass in Majeon-dong.

The system uses sensors to automatically detect snow or ice on the road surface and activate heating cables to melt it. The city expects the system to help with initial snow removal on stretches such as mountain passes and steep slopes, where snowplows have difficulty reaching quickly.

The city has newly installed an automatic brine spraying system along about 1.1 kilometers of Eoryong Pass in Sinam-ri, Nam-myeon. This brings the number of locations equipped with automatic brine spraying systems in Yangju City to 15, up from 14. After checking road conditions via on-site closed-circuit television (CCTV) from the control room, operators can remotely spray liquid deicing agent.

With these facility upgrades, the city plans to improve its response to sudden snowfall and black ice, a thin layer of ice that forms on roads, and reduce traffic disruptions during commutes.

An official from Yangju City's Road Management Division said, "The introduction of road heating cables and the expansion of automatic brine spraying systems will allow us to respond sooner, before snowplows arrive. We will maintain our emergency duty system diligently during the winter snow removal period so that residents can travel with peace of mind."
