"Easing MPE Funding Woes and Opening a Mass-Production Validation Fab"... SK hynix Launches 2 Trillion Won Financial Partnership Package
Launches "Export Supply Chain Strengthening Guarantee" with government and financial sector
Agreement signed and first guarantee certificate presented at Yongin Cluster
Kwak Nojeong: "Building a robust MPE ecosystem is essential"
SK hynix is launching a mutually beneficial financial safety net worth a total of 2 trillion won with the government and commercial banks to support semiconductor materials, parts and equipment (MPE) partners struggling to secure funding.
SK hynix said on October 19 that it signed an agreement for the “Export Supply Chain Strengthening Guarantee” and held a ceremony to present the first guarantee certificate at the Yongin Cluster promotional center in the Yongin General Industrial Complex, Gyeonggi Province. Attendees included SK hynix CEO Kwak Nojeong, Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Kim Jeong-kwan, representatives of the Korea Trade Insurance Corporation and the four major commercial banks—KB Kookmin, Shinhan, Woori and Hana—and representatives of partner companies.
The program was created to ease liquidity pressures on small and medium-sized and mid-sized partner companies facing difficulties securing working capital amid high interest rates and a global economic slowdown. SK hynix and commercial banks will jointly contribute funds, while the Korea Trade Insurance Corporation will provide guarantees. Participating companies will receive increased loan limits, preferential interest rates and reduced guarantee fees.
Before the signing ceremony, attendees toured the site of the first manufacturing plant (fab) at the SK hynix Yongin Semiconductor Cluster and the site for the planned “Trinity Fab.” The Trinity Fab is an advanced testbed linked to mass production that will be built inside the first fab, with the government, local governments and SK hynix jointly investing a total of 870 billion won in the project.
Until now, domestic small and medium-sized companies have faced limits in commercializing their products because they have had few opportunities to test self-developed new technologies and prototypes on actual production lines. The Trinity Fab will help companies evaluate component performance in advance using equipment and conditions identical to those in mass-production processes. It is regarded as a key facility that will strengthen the technological independence of domestic MPE companies and dramatically shorten the time needed to localize research and development results.
At a follow-up meeting, partner company representatives proposed practical measures needed to ensure a smooth supply of components and localize technology. Attendees agreed to further strengthen mutually beneficial cooperation between large companies and mid-sized and small companies to lead the next-generation semiconductor market.
