Sphere Begins Mass Production at Indonesian Nickel Smelter... Vertically Integrates Supply Chain from Feedstock to Superalloys
Sphere is beginning commercial operations at its nickel smelter in Indonesia, moving to vertically integrate its supply chain from high-purity nickel feedstock and precision processing in Korea to global supply. Its strategy is to strengthen the supply chain for superalloy materials needed in high-value-added industries such as aerospace, defense, oil and gas, and power generation, and accelerate the expansion of its related business.
Sphere, a global specialist in supply chain management (SCM) for key industries, announced on October 16 that its Excelsior Nickel Cobalt (ENC) smelter at the Indonesia Morowali Industrial Park (IMIP) had been completed and had begun commercial-scale production of high-purity Class 1 nickel cathodes and MHP.
The ENC project is an investment in which Sphere put $240 million earlier this year to secure exclusive, long-term offtake rights. The smelter is equipped with high-purity nickel production facilities with annual capacity of 72,000 tons, three large-scale high-pressure autoclaves, and a slurry pipeline extending approximately 22 kilometers. Within four weeks of starting operations, it reached around 50% of its nominal production capacity.
With this production base, Sphere has established a structure for sourcing feedstock from global upstream suppliers, having it precision-processed by domestic manufacturing partners, and then supplying it directly to companies in key industries worldwide. The company describes this as an asset-light, end-to-end SCM model.
High-purity Class 1 nickel cathodes are a key material for products used in extreme environments, including space launch vehicles and aerospace engine components, deep-hole drills, and castings and forgings for power generation. Sphere plans to import nickel cathodes produced at the ENC smelter directly into Korea and supply them to its network of strategic manufacturing partners.
Domestic manufacturing partners will process the nickel feedstock into high-performance superalloy materials and precision components. The finished products will then be supplied through direct exports to major U.S. companies and others.
The company cited its ability to manage the entire supply chain, from feedstock procurement and processing to exports, without directly owning large-scale manufacturing facilities as a competitive advantage. It said that by linking direct feedstock procurement, advanced materials processing in Korea, and direct global exports, it had established a just-in-time supply system that cuts procurement lead times by more than 90%.
Sphere expects vertical integration of its supply chain to improve cost competitiveness as well. It plans to use this foundation to reliably fulfill various long-term supply agreements (LTAs) and reduce related supply chain risks.
The company is also strengthening its performance and financial base. Sphere's consolidated revenue in the first half of this year rose 200% year over year, and it proactively secured import letter of credit (L/C) limits totaling 30 billion won from major banks.
A Sphere representative said, "The first production of nickel cathodes at our Indonesian smelter, established through partnerships with Tsingshan Group and Nickel Industries, demonstrates the strategic value of Sphere's aerospace SCM business. By vertically integrating a supply chain for key feedstock with the processing capabilities of Korea's leading manufacturers, we have laid the foundation to fulfill large-scale orders without delays."
