KRISS Vice President Park Yeongyu Elected to International Committee for Weights and Measures
Fifth Korean ever elected, joining global measurement standards policymaking
Official duties begin in March 2027... 28 years of measurement science research recognized
The Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science (KRISS) announced on October 16 that its Vice President Park Yeongyu had been elected a member of the International Committee for Weights and Measures (CIPM), which sets key policies in the field of measurement standards worldwide. He is the fifth Korean to be elected to the CIPM.
Park was elected as an incoming member at the 28th General Conference on Weights and Measures (CGPM), held in France on October 15 local time. He will officially begin his work at the first CIPM meeting in March 2027.

It discusses the direction of development for measurement standards, including the International System of Units (SI), used worldwide, and oversees the work and financial management of the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM). It also manages the activities of its consultative committees and appoints their chairs.
Park is an expert who has conducted research on measurement standards in the fields of force and torque for more than 28 years. He has also taken part in international cooperation, serving as vice president for external relations at the International Measurement Confederation (IMEKO) and as a member of the executive committee of the Asia Pacific Metrology Programme (APMP), among other roles.
In Korea, Jeong Myeongse, former president of KRISS, was first appointed to the CIPM in 1996. Park is the fifth Korean to join the committee, following former presidents Jeong Gwanghwa (2008), Kang Daeim (2013), and Park Sangyeol (2019).
With this election, Korea will be able to participate directly in discussions on international measurement standards policy and future development. Measurement standards underpin accurate measurement and quality control in fields ranging from semiconductors and advanced manufacturing to medicine and space technology.
