Russian Deputy PM: "Russian Diesel Supply to U.S. to Begin in 2-3 Weeks"
Follow-up to Trump-Putin diesel deal
4.8 million tons expected to be released in stages
Russian diesel is expected to be supplied to the United States within at least two to three weeks, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak said on October 15 (local time). Under the so-called "diesel deal," an agreement between the United States and Russia on diesel supplies, deliveries of Russian diesel are expected to increase in stages.
According to Russia's state-run TASS news agency on October 15 (local time), Novak told reporters at the Russian Energy Week event in Moscow that day, "Russian diesel will begin to be supplied to the United States within at least two to three weeks." He added, "To proceed with transportation, the contracts need to be finalized, the fuel needs to be loaded, vessels need to be chartered, and the shipments need to be sent to consumers. This will take two to three weeks. We need to finalize the contracts as soon as possible."
The supply of Russian diesel to the United States is seen as a step under the diesel deal previously signed by the two countries. U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed on the deal on October 9, with the supply of Russian diesel to the United States and global markets as its main focus. Under the agreement, Russia lifted its export ban on 500,000 tons of diesel starting October 10, while the U.S. Treasury temporarily eased sanctions on Russian diesel until April 7, 2027. Russia is expected to begin supplying 300,000 tons of diesel this month and eventually release a total of 4.8 million tons onto the global market.
Dmitry Peskov, a spokesman for the Russian presidential administration, also said at a media briefing that day, "A fairly large volume of diesel is currently available for supply," adding that "diesel volumes have begun flowing into the global market." He said, "Although this will not be enough to fully stabilize the oil market, it is naturally expected to have a positive effect on market stability."
