Organized by the Gyeonggi Regional Headquarters of Nonghyup Economic Holdings and sponsored by Gyeonggi Province, the Gyeongin District Livestock Cooperative Operations Council, and the Gyeonggi Branch of the National Hanwoo Association, the contest featured 56 head of Hanwoo from 48 farms across 16 cities and counties in the province.
Experts from the Korea Institute for Animal Products Quality Evaluation and the Korea Animal Improvement Association conducted the assessments. They evaluated meat quality and farm conditions by combining carcass grading, weighted at 95%, with farm environment assessments, weighted at 5%.
Hanwoo raised by grand prize winner Park Semin's farm weighed 857 kg at shipment and had a carcass weight of 534 kg, earning the top grade of 1++A. It sold at auction for 67,000 won per kg, about 2.5 times the regular auction price of 26,900 won per kg.
The Excellence Award went to farmer Im Gwanbin of the Icheon Livestock Cooperative, while five farms received Encouragement Awards. In the Excellent Brand category, the Suwon Hwaseong Osan Livestock Cooperative was recognized, and farmer Park Gwangsun, also affiliated with the cooperative, received the special "Cheongchun Yechan" award.
This year's contest also featured a program that allowed consumers to take part in the evaluation and inspect the quality of the Hanwoo themselves, as well as experience the auction process. The event was seen as having expanded beyond a producer-focused quality competition into an opportunity to share the excellence of Gyeonggi Hanwoo with consumers.
Gyeonggi Province plans to use the contest to enhance the competitiveness of farms producing premium beef and strengthen the brand value of Gyeonggi Hanwoo.
The awards ceremony will be held in conjunction with the Livestock Development Festival at Imjingak in Paju on October 25. The event will include awards for winning farms and other contributors, along with various consumer participation programs, including a grill master demonstration.
