The agreement is titled “Mutually Beneficial Cooperation in the ESG Environmental Sector.”
Lee Wonyong, Seongnam City’s director general of environmental health, and Yoon Hyunsik, head of the Korea Environment Corporation’s Seoul Metropolitan Area Eastern Regional Environmental Office, attended the signing ceremony.
Under the agreement, the two organizations will improve the ecological environment by creating biotopes, or habitats for living organisms, at the Taepyeong, Sujin and Sunae Wetland Ecological Parks along Tancheon, and planting nectar plants that provide food for honeybees. They will also jointly work to remove invasive species that disrupt ecosystems.
At the Galmachi Ecological Corridor and the Maengsan Firefly Ecological Park, they will monitor wildlife habitats and conduct activities including firefly exploration experiences and biodiversity surveys. The agreement will remain in effect for one year, through 2027.
With this agreement, Seongnam City has expanded its existing ESG partnership network, previously focused on businesses and organizations, to include public institutions.
A Seongnam City official said, “This agreement has allowed us to broaden the scope of cooperation to include local public institutions. We will continue to identify new areas for collaboration so that ESG values can be reflected across city administration.”
In 2024, Seongnam City enacted the “Ordinance on Promoting ESG and Establishing and Operating a Committee” and, last year, announced its vision of becoming an “ESG Special City.” The city has also established and is implementing a basic plan to promote ESG through 2030.
