Environmental cleanup efforts in industrial complexes are extending beyond factory grounds to nearby streams and walking trails.
Residents of the Gangseo area are also taking part in cleanup activities organized by the Busan-Jinhae Free Economic Zone Authority, which connects tenant companies with local volunteer groups.
The Busan-Jinhae Free Economic Zone Authority, headed by Park Sung-ho, announced on October 15 that it had held a cleanup in the area around Jisa Stream near Jisa Industrial Complex in Gangseo-gu, with around 35 participants, including representatives of tenant companies and local volunteer groups.

Participants included representatives of four tenant companies—Sungwoo Hitech, Samyoung MT, E&K, and Dongeun Forging—as well as members of the Nok-san-dong Nanumi Volunteer Group and the Jisa Volunteer Camp. They collected litter and cleaned up the area while walking along the stream, trails, and walking paths.
The activity is part of the "BJFEZ Eco Plogging Challenge," which the authority has been running since March this year. The challenge takes the form of a relay, with companies and residents joining cleanup activities in each industrial complex. It aims to link companies' environmental, social, and governance (ESG) efforts with activities in the local community.
Residents have continued to participate. According to the authority, 224 residents took part in campaigns held in the Gangseo area from March through the end of September. In coordination with the Gangseo-gu Volunteer Center, the authority tracked volunteer hours, enabling residents to count everyday environmental cleanup activities as volunteer service.
The authority plans to work with local volunteer organizations to develop programs that residents can join, such as walking events, and continue environmental conservation activities tailored to the characteristics of each industrial complex.
