"To Make His Girlfriend Think It Was His": Why He Demolished Someone Else's 2-Billion-Won Apartment
Chinese Apartment Worth Over 2 Billion Won, Including Two Parking Spaces
Fooled Management Office With Forged Documents and Demolished It Without Authorization
A man in China secretly demolished the interior of a luxury apartment without the owner's knowledge to convince his girlfriend that the apartment was his.
According to multiple media outlets, including China's Dashang News, on Oct. 15, Mr. Wu, who lives in Zhejiang Province, bought an apartment four years ago as a dowry for his daughter. The interior work had been completed. The apartment reportedly cost more than 10 million yuan (about 2 billion won), including two parking spaces, and had remained vacant since construction was completed.
The incident began in June this year, when Mr. Wu received a notification on his phone that a man named Mr. Zhang had applied to register as a tenant. Since Mr. Wu did not know him at all, he did not think much of it and asked the apartment manager to check on the property. At the time, the manager replied, "There's nothing wrong with the apartment." But last month, Mr. Wu received another notification that Mr. Zhang had applied to register as a tenant. Feeling that something was amiss, he contacted the manager again. The manager told him, "The other party, Mr. Zhang, completely stripped out the apartment's interior."
Mr. Wu said that the apartment complex had very strict management rules, under which even owners had to go through the manager to have their doors opened. The apartment's annual management fee is reportedly more than 12,000 yuan (about 2.42 million won).

Mr. Zhang told investigators, "I demolished it to make my girlfriend believe that the apartment belonged to me."
Mr. Wu criticized the management office for poor oversight, saying that the building management company did not verify the owner's identity at all before opening the door for Mr. Zhang. It was also found that Mr. Zhang had not submitted the required review documents before starting the remodeling work.
