Various events will be held nationwide on October 15, the 64th Sports Day, to encourage public participation in sports.
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism said it would hold hands-on events and participation programs with the Korea Sports Promotion Foundation, the Korea Sport & Olympic Committee and other relevant organizations to help people enjoy sports in their daily lives.
The Korea Sports Promotion Foundation will hold an awards ceremony at the Olympic Hall for its “Short-Form Video Contest on Sports Activities Using Artificial Intelligence (AI).” The contest, held from July 28 to September 15 to promote the positive values of sports, received a total of 385 video entries. After judging, 14 teams were selected as winners across the general and student divisions.
Kim Chaeun, a fourth-year student in the Department of Physical Education at Kyung Hee University, won the grand prize in the general division. In the student division, the grand prize went to “Gajigajideul” from Teresa Girls’ High School in Busan, comprising teacher Lee Jisu and second-year students Kim Hyewon, Moon Songhyeon, Park Hyeoni and Lee Yeonju. The grand prize winners will receive the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Award and a cash prize.
The Korea Sports Promotion Foundation is holding a special points-earning and prize event for members of Tteunteun Money. Through October 18, it will give prizes worth 5,000 won to 8,000 members who exercise at least three times a week and take part in a quiz, and add 1,000 bonus points to the accounts of 50,000 members.
At more than 400 private sports facilities, including gyms, that are part of the “National Fitness 100 Partners” program and offer simple fitness assessments, users who take part in an assessment through October 26 will receive 3,000 bonus points. Prizes will also be given out by lottery. Tteunteun Money is a program to promote public participation in sports by awarding points that can be converted into sports vouchers after 30 minutes or more of exercise. The support limit is 50,000 points per person.
A sports experience festival for more than 5,000 people will be held from October 16 to 18 at the Sports Value Center in Jinju, South Gyeongsang Province. Participants can try activities such as flag football and miniature golf, as well as enjoy additional programs such as face painting. On October 13 and 14, the center also held a “So-junghan Sports Day” attended by around 130 students from seven local elementary schools and their families.
Sports organizations are also running programs to give the public a chance to try different sports in person in conjunction with Sports Day. The Korea Biathlon Union will hold a biathlon electronic-rifle experience clinic for 300 adults on October 24 at Mir Stadium in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province. The Korea Tennis Association will run a family experience class for 50 beginners on October 25 at a tennis court in Seogwipo, Jeju.
Sports Day was established under the Enforcement Decree of the National Sports Promotion Act, enacted in 1963. In 2021, following the enactment of the Framework Act on Sports, the relevant provisions were moved from the National Sports Promotion Act to the Framework Act on Sports, and the day’s name was changed to “Sports Day” to raise public awareness of sports and promote participation.
The 107th National Sports Festival, the main event commemorating the 64th Sports Day, will be held in Jeju from October 16 to 22.
