Speaking to reporters after the completion ceremony for Hyundai Motor's new Pune plant in Talegaon, Maharashtra, in western India, Chung said, "The Indian market is growing rapidly and is also extremely important internationally."
Chung said, "This marks the 30th anniversary of our entry into India, and I think the Pune plant completion ceremony will be a very important milestone."
The previous day, Chung met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and announced plans for the group to invest approximately 21 trillion won in India by 2032.
Asked about his meeting with Modi, he said, "I spoke about providing vehicles with better quality and safety. As electric vehicles (EVs) are also becoming more common in India, I said we would work with local Indian companies in areas such as EVs and batteries to make better vehicles."
Regarding the completion ceremony, he emphasized, "Hyundai Motor Group's investment in India will accelerate the localization of research and development and production, while further strengthening India's role in our global sales strategy."
Asked how he felt about reaching the sixth anniversary of his inauguration, Chung said, "The six years have gone by so quickly. Thanks to the combined efforts of all our employees over the past six years, we have been able to make even a little progress. There have been ups and downs along the way, but I believe the most important thing is our human resources."
He continued, "I believe it is our mission to devote every effort to helping our people develop further and to stay ahead in areas such as technology and quality. Time continues to pass, but I will work even harder to help the company grow in a more rewarding way."
Chung traveled to India without holding a separate event to mark the sixth anniversary of his inauguration. This is seen as a sign of how important the Indian market is.
Chung said, "EV charging infrastructure is still insufficient, so I think we need to bring in charging systems used overseas and expand them here. If there are areas where we need to join forces with other Indian automakers or global automakers, then we should do so."
