"Performance Over Academic Credentials"... KEPCO Specially Promotes Two High School Hires to Deputy General Manager
Selected 12 for Special Promotion; Recognized for Improving Power System Efficiency and Addressing Grid Risks
Promoted 1-2 Years Earlier Than Through Regular Promotion
Plans to Create 300 Jobs for High School Graduates Over Three Years
Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) has specially promoted two employees hired through its high school graduate recruitment track to deputy general manager, a managerial-level position. It typically takes more than nine years for employees hired as high school graduates to reach this rank, but the two were promoted one to two years earlier than usual in recognition of their work performance.
KEPCO announced on October 14 that it had selected 12 employees for special promotion for contributing to the achievement of the company's strategic goals and delivering outstanding work performance. Two of them had joined through the high school graduate recruitment track.
KEPCO's special promotion system allows employees who have contributed to the company's development to advance by one rank, to department head or deputy general manager, regardless of their promotion eligibility or years of service.
The high school graduate hires promoted this time were recognized for improving the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of power system operations and addressing risk factors that could undermine stable grid operations. Their promotion came one to two years earlier than usual, compared with the more than nine years it typically takes high school graduate hires to reach deputy general manager through regular promotion.
KEPCO said the promotions demonstrate that opportunities for advancement are based on expertise gained in the field and work performance, rather than educational background or hiring track. The company also emphasized that its ongoing efforts to expand the recruitment and development of high school talent have resulted in actual promotions and rewards.
KEPCO is also expanding its recruitment of high school talent. Last year, it signed an agreement with the Ministry of Education to create 300 jobs for high school graduates over three years. This year, it has expanded open recruitment for high school graduates and is running KEPCO Energy Ieum School, a training program linked to recruitment.
