"Is This a Scam Call?" Chinese Woman Wins 1.5 Billion Won with Free Lottery Ticket from Tourist Attraction
Receives a Lottery Ticket at a Tourist Attraction During the National Day Holiday
Plans to Donate Part of Her Winnings
A woman who won prize money worth 1.5 billion won with a free lottery ticket she received at a tourist attraction in China has drawn attention with her story.
According to China's Jinan Daily on October 14, a female tourist who visited Beijing's Jinhai Lake Pipa Island during the recent National Day holiday won the first prize of 7.7 million yuan (about 1.5 billion won) with a free lottery ticket.
The tourist attraction recently held an event giving free lottery tickets to visitors who purchased admission tickets. The woman paid 228 yuan (about 45,000 won) for an admission ticket and received a lottery ticket. On October 8, an official from the attraction confirmed through a lottery retailer that the ticket had won the first prize.
"We thought the prize would be worth only a few thousand yuan at most, and never expected it to be such a large amount," the person in charge of operations said. "After a staff meeting, we unanimously decided to keep the winning ticket safe during the holiday, contact the winner, and tell her how to claim it."
But when the tourist received a call notifying her of the win, she was suspicious, saying, "I'm busy right now and don't have time to come. Is this a scam call?" The person in charge clearly identified himself and persuaded her, saying, "If you come in person and check the ticket we're keeping for you, you'll immediately see that this isn't a scam."
