"Goal: Break into the Top 36"... The Charity Classic Begins
Perk for players ranked in the top 36 in Genesis Points
Entry to next week's Genesis Championship on the line
36th-ranked Heo Inhoe, 38th-ranked Lee Taehee and others fight to stay in contention
"Finish in the top 36 in the Genesis points standings."
That is the goal of players competing in the KPGA Tour's The Charity Classic, which has a total purse of 1 billion won. The tournament will be held over four days starting Oct. 15 at the Valley and Seowon courses at Seowon Valley Country Club in Paju, Gyeonggi Province (par 72, 7,043 yards).
With 200 million won in prize money going to the winner, the Genesis points are especially important. The field for the Genesis Championship, which offers the largest purse of the season, will be determined based on this week's results at The Charity Classic. Only players ranked in the top 36 in the Genesis points standings at the end of the tournament will qualify for the Genesis Championship, which begins Oct. 22 at Woo Jeong Hills Country Club in Cheonan, South Chungcheong Province, with a total purse of $4 million.
The winner of The Charity Classic will earn 1,000 Genesis points. Players ranked between 30th and 40th are set for a fierce battle for a place in next week's tournament.
Cho Woo-young, who became the inaugural champion at The Charity Classic when it was launched in 2024, is 34th in the Genesis points standings with 1,512.27 points. He is only 200 points ahead of players outside the top 36, so he cannot afford to relax. The standings are tightly packed, with 36th-ranked Heo Inhoe on 1,337.20 points, Lee Jae-jin on 1,309.61 points, Lee Tae-hee on 1,290.40 points, Kang Kyung-nam on 1,283.41 points, and Canadian Korean Shin Yong-gu on 1,256.15 points.

By contrast, first-ranked Jang You-bin (4,487.08 points), second-ranked Shin Sang-hun (4,207.94 points), and third-ranked Song Min-hyeok (3,951.49 points) have all but secured their places in the Genesis Championship. Defending champion Choi Seung-bin is also 12th in the Genesis points standings, with 2,515.61 points. He will pursue a second consecutive title with relatively little pressure. "As a player, having the chance to defend a title is meaningful in itself. I want to do my best and put on another good performance," Choi said.
