Everland Announces Birth of Baby Capybara Triplets, On View Starting Oct. 15
Born on September 28
A naming contest to be held
Everland, operated by Samsung C&T Resort Group, announced Wednesday that three baby capybaras have joined its family.
The triplets were born on September 28 to Dotom, a male, and Dutum, a female, a capybara couple both born in 2024. Weighing just over 1 kilogram each at birth, the triplets are now two weeks old and growing healthily on their mother's milk under the care of Everland's veterinary team and zookeepers.
Native to areas around rivers and wetlands in South America, capybaras are the largest rodents alive today and have an average lifespan of about 10 years. Their gestation period is about four to five months, and they give birth to multiple offspring at a time. Even newborns are relatively well developed: they are born covered in fur, with their eyes open, and can walk soon after birth. With their round ears, blunt noses, and characteristically relaxed expressions and behavior, capybaras are regarded as quintessential "healing animals."
Online, they have earned nicknames such as "the ultimate socializers" and "the most popular animals in the animal kingdom" for their ease in mingling with animals of all kinds, including ducks, turtles, and monkeys. At Everland Zoo, capybaras soaking in warm water and appearing to leisurely enjoy a hot spring bath have also drawn considerable attention.
The capybara triplets, now venturing out with their mother and father, will be available to meet in person at Everland's Ppupa Town starting October 15. Everland plans to closely monitor the babies' health and how well they adjust to their surroundings, and to adjust the viewing times and locations as needed.
Everland also plans to hold a variety of online and offline customer participation programs, including a naming contest that reflects each triplet's personality, to celebrate their birth and let visitors enjoy their uniquely gentle charm.
