Come for Salted Shrimp, Get Free Tax Advice Too... Mapo-gu Sets Up Booth at Festival
"Tax Consultation and Smart Payment" services offered Oct. 16-18
Village tax accountants and district staff to advise on national and local taxes
Mapo-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Yoo Dongkyun) announced on October 14 that it will offer visitors free tax consultations and guidance on payment methods at the 19th Mapo Naru Salted Shrimp Festival, which runs from October 16 to 18. A “Smart Tax Payment and Consultation with a Village Tax Accountant” booth will be set up near the festival’s “Local Specialties Market” and operate daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Consultations will be divided into national and local taxes. Seoul’s village tax accountants will handle national taxes, including capital gains tax, comprehensive income tax, and inheritance and gift taxes, while district office tax staff will handle local taxes.
Combined consultations on national and local taxes will be held at 2 p.m. on October 16 and at 10 a.m. on October 17 and 18. Additional consultations on local taxes will be offered at 2 p.m. on October 17 and 18. Each session will last two hours, and visitors can sign up on-site. To protect personal information, consultations will be conducted one-on-one and limited to 15 minutes per case.
The booth will also help older visitors who are unfamiliar with smartphones install and use STAX, Seoul’s tax payment app. Applications for electronic local tax notices and automatic payments by card or bank account will also be accepted on-site. Applying for both services can save up to 1,600 won per tax notice.
“I hope you enjoy the festival and take the opportunity to get advice on tax matters you’ve been curious about,” District Mayor Yoo Dongkyun said. “We will continue to help residents with their tax concerns and make paying taxes more convenient.”
In addition to the festival, the district operates a village tax accountant program. Ten village tax accountants serving 16 neighborhoods provide free consultations on national and local taxes and assist with appeals, including objections to local tax assessments of less than 10 million won. The names and contact information of the tax accountants in charge are available under “Village Tax Accountant Information” on the Mapo-gu website.

The Salted Shrimp Festival is the district’s signature autumn festival, reviving the history of Mapo Naru, where salted shrimp from across the country was once brought together during the Joseon Dynasty. This year, the three-day festival will be held at Peace Plaza in World Cup Park. There will be 12 sales booths offering salted shrimp from across the country, four more than last year. Other activities include an LED-lit traditional yellow-sailed boat on Nanji Pond and hands-on experiences such as making shrimp kimbap, preparing kimchi, and joining a bossam feast.
