LH: "Simplified Sprinkler Systems to Be Gradually Expanded to Aging National Rental Housing"
The Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH) said on the 13th that it will begin expanding the installation of simplified sprinkler systems, which it has been installing in aging permanent rental housing, to aging national rental housing in phases starting this year.
Sprinklers are effective for responding quickly when a fire breaks out. However, installing them in completed housing requires additional work, such as installing pipes, which can be costly. In response, LH began developing simplified sprinkler systems last year that use existing water supply pipes within each housing unit, and has since installed them in aging rental housing. They have been installed in approximately 14,000 households to date.
Starting this year, LH will extend the installation to aging national rental housing in conjunction with its national rental housing remodeling projects. Taking into account the ceiling structures and finishes in individual units, LH plans to use construction methods suited to site conditions, such as partially removing and reinforcing ceilings. It will also develop additional installation methods that can be used independently of remodeling projects, expanding the number of homes eligible for simplified sprinkler systems.
Previously, Assemblyman Bok Giwang, the ruling party's secretary on the National Assembly's Land, Infrastructure and Transport Committee, called for faster installation of simplified sprinkler systems, noting that more than 70% of all fatalities in fires at LH rental housing occurred in homes without sprinklers.
