"Lies" Returns as Uncut Complete Edition After 27 Years
Domestic Rating Withheld After Venice Invitation
Opening Nov. 11 with an Adults-Only Rating
Director Jang Sun-woo's "Lies" is returning in an uncut version.
Production company Shin Cine announced on October 13 that "Lies: 4K Uncut Complete Edition" will open in theaters on November 11 with an adults-only rating.
The film was invited to the competition section of the 1999 Venice International Film Festival, but its domestic release was not confirmed. The Korea Media Rating Board withheld its rating, citing sexual content and sadistic depictions. The decision sparked debate over film censorship standards and the limits of artistic expression. After the rating was withheld twice, the film was released in theaters in 2000 in a version with some scenes cut.

The film is based on writer Jang Jung-il's novel "Tell Me Lies." Director Jang Sun-woo focused on the relationships between characters who defy social conventions and taboos. Its narrative of desire, moving between truth and lies, pleasure and pain, fueled debate over the scope of subject matter and expression.
