Meta Biomed announced on October 13 that it had been selected for the “2026 Win-Win AI Transformation (AX) Leading Model Development Support Program,” signed an agreement for the project, and would begin work on it. The total project budget is 2.9 billion won.

The Win-Win AX Leading Model Development Support Program is a government initiative overseen by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups and implemented by the Korea Technology and Information Promotion Agency for SMEs. It is designed to have large companies and others support AI transformation at small and medium-sized manufacturing companies. The project will run for 12 months from the date the agreement is signed.

Meta Biomed produces not only finished biodegradable sutures but also biopolymers, their key raw material, in-house. These biopolymers are polymer materials that break down and are absorbed by the body over time, and are used as raw materials for biodegradable medical devices. Recently, the company has moved to upgrade its production system as it pursues the commercialization and external sales of biopolymers themselves, expanding beyond supplying materials for its own sutures.

The project’s focus is not simply to expand the existing manufacturing execution system (MES), but to add AI-powered analytical capabilities to the manufacturing floor and establish a data-driven decision-making system. Meta Biomed will link manufacturing and quality data by production lot across key processes, from producing glycolide and para-dioxanone—the raw materials for biopolymers—to polymerizing them. Using this accumulated data, the company will develop process-specific AI models to identify optimal production conditions (recipes) for each process, predict quality in advance, and detect anomalies early. The company plans to have AI recommend optimal operating conditions on the manufacturing floor to increase productivity and yield and improve product quality consistency.

A Meta Biomed representative said, “This project will provide an opportunity to combine AI with the data accumulated at our biopolymer production sites to improve both productivity and quality consistency. We will grow biopolymers into an independent growth engine and take another step forward in the global medical materials market by applying AI-based manufacturing technology to our capabilities spanning materials through finished medical devices.”
