As the controversy spread, the shopping mall issued an official apology. It also acknowledged that test results confirmed cat fur and leather had been used. However, the company said, "The issue arose during custom production (OEM) at a partner factory. The brand never asked the factory to use cat fur or approved its use."
According to the company, the product was originally scheduled to go on sale on Oct. 11. However, on Oct. 10, a day earlier, it received feedback from a testing agency that cat fur had been used in some products and that they did not meet the brand's material sourcing standards. The company added, "During the product information registration process, the staff member in charge posted unverified information about the materials and manufacturing process on the detail page before completing a final check, causing the controversy to escalate."
As soon as the brand became aware of the situation, it removed the relevant product links and fully suspended production and sales of the products. It also made a donation to an animal rescue organization and said it would continue to support animal rescue efforts.
Regarding the incident, attorney Lin Xiaoming of Sichuan Yixiang Law Firm said, "Under current Chinese law, there is no provision that directly prohibits the production of clothing from the fur of cats or dogs kept as pets." However, he explained, "Under the Animal Epidemic Prevention Law, the fur and hides of cats and dogs must undergo quarantine inspection when they are processed, distributed, or sold." If the items have not undergone quarantine inspection, authorities may impose a fine equivalent to their value, he said.
