Dongseo University's Anchor Project Group Demonstrates AI-Based Video Content in Collaboration with BIFF Community BIFF

Ten Social Welfare Students Help Run Event, Combining Welfare with Advanced Media Technology

A citizen's story captured in a 51-second video has grown into content that connects welfare and technology.

Dongseo University was praised for showcasing new possibilities for local cultural content at the 051 Film Festival, held in conjunction with the Busan International Film Festival, through video content created with artificial intelligence (AI) and students' hands-on participation.

Dongseo University (President Jang Jeguk) announced on October 12 that its Anchor Project Group had wrapped up the 10th 051 Film Festival, held over four days from October 8 to 11 around Gwangbok-ro and BIFF Square in Nampo-dong, Busan.

Held in conjunction with Community BIFF, a program of the Busan International Film Festival (BIFF), the event brought together video content created by local university students and works incorporating AI technology for local residents.

Named after Busan's area code, 051, the festival uses 51-second videos to share stories about welfare in everyday life. Marking its 10th anniversary this year, the festival shared citizens' stories under the theme "Connection - Your Story Connects to Busan's Tomorrow" and created a forum for communication linking the present and the future.

At the event, Dongseo University's Anchor Project Group presented results from "AX-Based Cultural Content Open-UIC," the university's industry-academia collaboration initiative. AX refers to using AI to drive change across industries and work processes. The group focused on applying AX to cultural content production to expand the foundations of the local video industry and strengthen hands-on industry-academia collaboration.

During the festival, award-winning entries from the B-Contents Festival held in June, along with AX-based video content created by local university students, were presented at an awards ceremony and special screening. A dedicated promotional booth also showcased examples of content production using generative AI.

The festival also drew attention for its connection to the newly introduced AI category of the 051 Film Festival. By incorporating social values and welfare stories into content, rather than simply using advanced technology to produce videos, the initiative broadened the intersection of technology and culture.

University student staff, including around 10 students from Dongseo University's Department of Social Welfare, helped run the event. They guided visitors, operated the promotional booth, and managed side events, gaining hands-on experience. The event gave them an opportunity to connect the welfare knowledge they had acquired through their studies with a local cultural event, interact with visitors, and build practical skills.

The festival was co-hosted by Dongseo University's Anchor Project Group, the Busan Metropolitan Council on Social Welfare, Busan Metropolitan City, and the Busan Ilbo.

Hwang Gihyeon, head of Dongseo University's Anchor Project Group and head of its Industry-Academia Cooperation Foundation, described it as "a result of regional industry-academia collaboration that brings together the university's advanced media technology and the local community's heartfelt commitment to welfare."

Hwang added, "We will lead a mutually beneficial model that can make a tangible contribution to the local community and support students in becoming future-ready talent equipped with both technological expertise and a grounding in the humanities."

The citizens' stories that began with 51-second videos continued through AI-based content production and university students' hands-on experience. Building on the event, Dongseo University's Anchor Project Group plans to expand its industry-academia collaboration model for cultural content, connecting stories from the local community with the university's technology and talent.
