Iran: "U.S. Responded to Proposal to End War, but Inadequately"... Threatens Attacks on Communications Cables
"Communications Cables and Data Centers Within Our Reach"
Back-Channel Talks Between the Two Sides Through a Mediator Continue
Iran warned that if fighting resumes, it will launch further attacks on facilities in the Middle East, including communications cables and data centers, saying the response it received from the United States through a mediator to its proposal to end the war was inadequate.
According to Iran's state-run IRNA news agency on October 11 (local time), Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, said at a press conference that day, "The United States responded to the conditions we sent for reopening the Strait of Hormuz, but its response was inadequate. Negotiations can move forward only if the United States gives a clear answer." He added, "If fighting resumes, many undersea cables and data centers in the region will come within our range."
He also stressed that Iran would never give up control of the Strait of Hormuz. "Control of the Strait of Hormuz is a major source of national wealth and an important national asset," Secretary Rezaei said. "Iran's interests are not limited to closing the strait or collecting transit fees."
His point was that if the United States wants negotiations, it must first meet the demands Iran has already put forward. At the annual United Nations (UN) General Assembly held last month, Iran conveyed the following demands through a mediator: lifting the U.S. naval blockade; the immediate return of frozen funds; an exemption from sanctions on Iranian oil exports; and a halt to fighting on all fronts. Iran had proposed that it could reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days if the United States met these demands.
He also said that the approach to negotiations between the United States and Iran would have to change. "We have held negotiations three times, but each time the United States abandoned the talks and attacked Iran," Secretary Rezaei said, strongly criticizing the United States. "It is only natural that we take a different diplomatic approach toward a party that signs an agreement and then unilaterally violates it."

He added, "The United States is trying to find a way out of its current predicament, but it is failing because it does not understand Iran's immense power. Ending the war is in the hands of the Iranian people, and we will never stop resisting and defending ourselves until our rights are recognized and the United States makes concessions."
