Hosted by Chuncheon City and Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province and organized by the Gangwon Research and Development Support Group, the festival runs for two days, through Saturday, October 10. It is being held in Chuncheon for the first time in three years, since 2023.

At the opening ceremony, held at 11 a.m. Friday, artist Yeom Donggyun presented a VR drawing performance. Awards were also presented to scientists and businesspeople who have contributed to economic and industrial development through advances in science and technology and technological innovation.

About 30 organizations, including innovation institutions, universities and science museums, are taking part in the event and operating booths where visitors can experience extended reality (XR), artificial intelligence (AI) robots and VR. Programs for families include science experiment shows, an OX quiz, a science-themed costume contest and humanoid robot performances.

A talk concert featuring science YouTuber Su Dragon Maker and astronomer Shim Chaekyung will also be held. They will talk about science with the audience under the themes "The Future AI and Making Will Create Together" and "A Familiar Yet Unfamiliar Place: The Moon," respectively.

At the opening ceremony, Chuncheon Mayor Yuk Donghan stressed the need to expand the research and development base in the Gangwon region.

Mayor Yuk said, "The research and development special zone began with the question of how we could build competitiveness when Gangwon's share of public-sector R&D nationwide was less than 1%. In cooperation with the National Assembly, we established a legal basis for the special zone in the Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province Act and secured funding for a feasibility study."

He added, "Chuncheon is positioning itself as an education city and working to help children become more familiar with science. We will lower the barriers between universities and the community so that the universities' human and material resources can be used to foster Chuncheon children's interest in science."
