A red monster who was killed by the hero Hercules in Greek mythology has swept through South Korea's bookstores. The story is about Autobiography of Red, a signature work by Canadian writer Anne Carson, 76, who was named this year's Nobel Prize in Literature laureate. Sales of the book surged 367-fold immediately after the award was announced, and Carson's works swept into the upper ranks of bestseller lists at major bookstores. A rush of orders even depleted publishers' stocks.

At Kyobo Book Centre, sales from 8 p.m. on October 8 to 9 a.m. on October 9 increased 138.1-fold compared with the same period the previous day. Less than a day after the announcement, the Nobel Prize effect had begun in earnest in South Korea's publishing market.
The work drawing the strongest response is Autobiography of Red (Hankyoreh Publishing). At YES24, sales of the book surged 367-fold from before the award announcement. As of October 8, it simultaneously topped the daily bestseller lists at Kyobo Book Centre and YES24, and remained at the top of Kyobo Book Centre's real-time sales rankings through noon on October 9.
Other works also entered the upper ranks in quick succession. At Kyobo Book Centre, Nox (Bomnal Books), The Beauty of the Husband (Hankyoreh Publishing), and Eros the Bittersweet (Nanda) recorded high sales rankings. At Aladin, Carson's works occupied the top four spots on the real-time bestseller list on the morning of October 9. At major online bookstores, some titles were switched to preorder sales as orders surged.
In particular, Autobiography of Red is a work that epitomizes Carson's literary experimentation. It reimagines Geryon, a monster killed by Hercules in Greek mythology, as a wounded boy in the modern world. Rather than centering on the hero's victory, it tells a story of love, loss, and growing up through the monster's life. Written as a novel in verse, it also illustrates how Carson's work crosses genre boundaries.
Nox, which has also attracted attention, is an experimental work created in memory of her late older brother. It combines letters, photographs, and other records to trace memories of loss. The Beauty of the Husband explores marriage, betrayal, and the demise of love in the form of a long narrative poem. All three works are distinguished by forms that depart from the conventions of traditional novels.

On October 8 local time, the Swedish Academy named her this year's Nobel Prize in Literature laureate, citing her bold and original body of work, which creates new forms of contemporary literature through a playful dialogue with the classical tradition.
A total of nine of Carson's books have been translated and published in South Korea. Nanda has published four titles: Eros the Bittersweet, Short Talks, Glass, Irony and God, and Plainwater. Hankyoreh Publishing has released three: Autobiography of Red, The Beauty of the Husband, and Red Doc. Bomnal Books has published Float and Nox.
Publishers and bookstores have moved to secure supplies in response to the sudden surge in orders. Yoo Seongwon, head of Nanda's business division, said that orders poured in after the award announcement and depleted the publisher's available stock. As printing presses are closed for the Hangeul Day holiday, the publisher plans to reprint and ship the books starting October 12.
Kyobo Book Centre also set up a display at its Gwanghwamun branch on the morning of October 9 to commemorate the Nobel Prize in Literature, but struggled to keep it stocked due to limited supplies. Most of the books prepared for the display sold by the morning, and staff continued to replenish it as additional stock arrived.
