Democratic Party: "Uphold Hangul's Value of Inclusiveness"... PPP: "Political Circles Should Reflect on Their Language"
Ruling and opposition parties emphasize King Sejong's "spirit of caring for the people" on Hangul Day
The Democratic Party of Korea and the People Power Party marked Hangul Day on Oct. 9 by reflecting on King Sejong’s spirit of caring for the people and emphasizing the value of Hangul. The People Power Party, however, criticized some Democratic Party figures for their harsh language, saying political circles should reflect on the way they speak.
Son Myeongsu, a spokesperson for the Democratic Party of Korea, said in a written briefing on Friday, “On the 100th anniversary of the establishment of Hangul Day, we will reflect on the creativity and inclusiveness of Hangul.”
Son said, “Hangul Day, which began in 1926 as ‘Gagyanal,’ was the product of a struggle to protect our language and writing during Japanese colonial rule. Hangul has now grown beyond being the writing system of the Republic of Korea into a valuable asset that connects our culture with the world.”
He added, “Cases such as the Cia-Cia people of Indonesia adopting Hangul to write their native language demonstrate its scientific design and adaptability. We will carry the history of the past 100 years, during which Hangul has expanded around the world, into the next 100 years.”
Park Chungkwon, chief spokesperson for the People Power Party, referred to King Sejong’s spirit of caring for the people in a commentary on Friday, emphasizing, “Today, as we reflect on the meaning of Hangul, we should also reflect on the language used in political circles.”
He said, “The Democratic Party has made a point of admonishing the People Power Party every Hangul Day, but harsh language and abusive remarks by some ruling party figures continue unabated. Before admonishing others, I hope they will first reflect on what they have said to the people.”
