Hyosung Heavy Industries said on October 8 that it had built an HILS (Hardware-in-the-Loop Simulation) system at its Heavy Industries Research Institute in Gwacheon, Gyeonggi Province, to verify the performance and stability of 2-GW-class HVDC controllers.

The HILS system is a key testing system for safely integrating large-capacity, GW-class HVDC into existing power grids.

As HVDC transmission capacity increases, the controllers and operating conditions become more complex, making prior verification more important. The number of scenarios to be tested, including grid failures and emergencies, increases two to three times.

HILS connects an actual HVDC controller to virtual 2-GW-class converter valves and a power grid to verify the control system's stable response in an environment similar to real-world conditions. In particular, it can simulate hazardous situations that are difficult to test on an actual power grid and conduct repeated tests over an extended period, significantly improving the stability and reliability of HVDC controllers.

In building the facility, Hyosung Heavy Industries secured the technologies required for every stage of the HILS system, from design and installation to testing and operation. In particular, it applied the grid control and verification expertise it had accumulated while operating a 200-MW-class voltage-source HVDC system installed at the Yangju Substation in Gyeonggi Province to build the 2-GW-class test environment.

Hyosung Heavy Industries plans to use the performance verification facility to improve the reliability of domestically developed GW-class HVDC systems and advance the West Coast Energy Highway project.

A Hyosung Heavy Industries official said, "The significance of building this HILS system goes beyond securing testing facilities. It gives us an independent technological foundation for further advancing our in-house-developed 2-GW-class HVDC controller. Building on this, we will continue expanding our entry into the global HVDC market with homegrown technologies."
