Dongdaemun-gu to Create Green Spaces Within a "5-Minute Walk"... Invest KRW 14.3 Billion by 2030
Parks Linked to Redevelopment, Tree-Lined Streets, and Streamside Greening
Dongdaemun-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Choi Dongmin), will invest KRW 14.3 billion by 2030 to create a city where residents can enjoy green spaces within a five-minute walk of home. The plan centers on securing new parks in conjunction with redevelopment and reconstruction projects and connecting green spaces along roads and waterways.
Dongdaemun-gu announced on Thursday that it had established the “Greener Dongdaemun-gu Green Space Expansion Plan.” The plan will be implemented in phases across three areas from this month through December 2030: expanding parks and green spaces through urban development projects, creating tree-lined streets, and restoring streamside ecosystems while expanding green spaces.
First, the district will secure new parks and green spaces in conjunction with urban development projects, including redevelopment and reconstruction. It plans to make up for the shortage of green space in the city center by connecting parks and green spaces created through development with existing green spaces in residential areas.
Tree-lined streets will be created along major roads. Street trees and green strips will be improved to suit the characteristics of each area, while garden-style green strips and traffic-island gardens will transform roads into green pedestrian spaces.
Green spaces along waterways, including Jungnangcheon, Seongbukcheon, and Jeongneungcheon, will also be expanded. Trees and seasonal flowers will be planted in unused spaces and around the waterways to create places for residents to rest and enjoy leisure activities. Rather than developing and managing street trees, green strips, streamside green spaces, and parks separately, the district plans to connect all green spaces in residential areas into a single green network.

“Green spaces do more than improve the urban landscape; they are important places that enrich residents’ daily lives and improve their quality of life,” District Mayor Choi Dongmin said. “We will expand parks and green spaces in conjunction with urban development projects and make Dongdaemun-gu a greener place where residents can enjoy nature close to home by creating tree-lined streets and greening areas along waterways.”
