The meetings are seen as an effort to expand cooperation with Korean companies in next-generation AI semiconductors, including high-bandwidth memory (HBM), as the AI accelerator market grows rapidly.
According to industry sources on Oct. 7, Su visited Samsung Electronics' Seocho office in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, at around 5 p.m. that day. She met with senior executives, including Jun Young-hyun, vice chairman, CEO and head of Samsung Electronics' Device Solutions (DS) Division, and had dinner with them.
Su was welcomed by Kim Jaejoon, vice president and head of strategic marketing for the Memory Business at Samsung Electronics' DS Division, and Cho Sangyeon, vice president and head of Samsung's Americas business. AMD executives accompanying her included Chief Technology Officer Joseph Macri and Jack Huynh, senior vice president and general manager of the Computing and Graphics Group.
Asked by reporters what she would discuss with Samsung Electronics executives, Su replied, "We'll talk about our broader partnership."
Su and Vice Chairman Jun last met about seven months ago. Su also visited South Korea in March this year, when she toured Samsung Electronics' production lines at its Pyeongtaek campus with Jun and Han Jin-man, president and head of the Foundry Business. At the time, she also had dinner with Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong at Seungjiwon in Hannam-dong, Seoul.
Industry observers are watching for the possibility that the meeting could further broaden the scope of AI semiconductor cooperation between Samsung Electronics and AMD. Samsung Electronics supplies HBM3E and HBM4 for AMD's AI accelerators, maintaining a partnership in memory. AMD has selected Samsung Electronics as a preferred supplier of HBM4 for its next-generation AI accelerator, the Instinct MI455X.
There is also interest in whether cooperation will expand into foundry services. As AMD moves to increase its supply of AI accelerators, the possibility of using Samsung Electronics' advanced manufacturing processes is being discussed. For Samsung Electronics, securing AMD, a major fabless company, as a foundry customer could also help improve its business performance.
Su is also said to have met with Kwak Noh-jung, president and CEO of SK hynix, that day. The two are reportedly meeting in South Korea for the first time. As demand for HBM surges alongside the expansion of the AI accelerator market, attention is focused on whether AMD and SK hynix will broaden their cooperation, particularly on next-generation high-performance memory such as HBM4.
