AMD CEO Lisa Su Meets Samsung, SK in South Korea in Series of Meetings... "Exploring Opportunities for Memory and Foundry Cooperation"
Executives Meet in Succession to Discuss AI Semiconductor Cooperation
Su Directly Calls Samsung "One of Our Most Strategic Partners"
Focus on Expanded Cooperation in Samsung Foundry and SK hynix HBM4
Lisa Su, chair and chief executive officer (CEO) of AMD, is visiting South Korea and will meet with executives from Samsung Electronics and SK hynix in succession to discuss ways to expand cooperation in AI semiconductors.
According to industry sources on October 7, Su will meet with key executives, including Younghyun Jeon, vice chairman and head of Samsung Electronics' Device Solutions (DS) Division, at Samsung Electronics' Seocho office in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, that afternoon.
At a press conference that afternoon at AMD Gamer Day, held at Seoul Dragon City in Yongsan-gu, Su was asked about the meetings. She said, "I came here to Seoul to meet with our partners," adding, "I am scheduled to meet with Samsung, and I have also met with SK hynix."
Su also visited South Korea in March, when she toured Samsung Electronics' production lines at its Pyeongtaek campus with Jeon and Jinman Han, president and head of the Foundry Business, among others. She later had dinner with Samsung Electronics Chairman Jaeyong Lee at Seungjiwon in Hannam-dong, Yongsan-gu, Seoul.

Referring directly to Samsung Electronics that day, Su said, "Samsung is one of our most strategic partners across DDR4 and DDR5, as well as high-bandwidth memory (HBM) and a wide range of other technologies." She added, "We continue to explore opportunities to work with Samsung across memory and foundry."
Samsung Electronics continues its cooperation with AMD in memory, supplying HBM3E (fifth-generation) and HBM4 (sixth-generation) for AMD's latest AI accelerators. AMD previously named Samsung Electronics its preferred supplier of HBM4 for its next-generation AI accelerator, the Instinct MI455X.
As AMD continues to stress the need to increase AI accelerator production, the possibility of foundry cooperation using Samsung Electronics' most advanced process technology is also being discussed. If Samsung Electronics secures AMD as a foundry customer, it could improve utilization rates and help boost the division's performance.
Su is also reported to have met with SK hynix President and CEO Noh-jung Kwak earlier that afternoon. The two are said to have met in person in South Korea for the first time.
With demand for AI accelerators surging, attention is also focused on whether AMD and SK hynix will expand their cooperation in high-performance memory, including HBM4.
