Daegu City Chapter Officials Visit Gunwi in Support
Kim Hyunju and Lee Chongmu Stage Tent Protest
On October 7, the Daegu City Chapter of the Democratic Party visited Kim Hyunju and Lee Chongmu, Gunwi County Council members, who are continuing their tent protest in front of the Gunwi County Council, to express their support and solidarity.
The support visit included Park Hyung Ryong, Chairman of the Daegu City Chapter, Heo So (Jung and Nam Districts), Shin Hyochul (Dong District and Gunwi County A District), Choi Kyusik (Seo District), Park Junghui (Buk District A), Choi Wooyoung (Buk District B), Park Jungkwon (Suseong District B), Kim Seongtae (Dalseo District B), as well as city and district council members and other key officials and local politicians of the Daegu City Chapter.
Park Hyungryong, Chair of the Democratic Party Daegu Metropolitan City Committee, along with district committee chairpersons, visited the Gunwi County Council to support two Democratic Party county council members who are on a tent sit-in protest.
View original imageMembers Kim Hyunju and Lee Chongmu began the tent protest in front of Gunwi County Office on October 6, demanding the protection of local legislators' legitimate right to speak and request materials, after a scheduled five-minute free speech at Gunwi County Council was canceled and controversy arose during the request for data necessary for administrative audits.
Park Hyung Ryong, Chairman of the Daegu City Chapter, strongly criticized, "Restricting the right to speak and carry out legislative activities of local lawmakers, who have been elected as representatives of the citizens, undermines the fundamental principles of parliamentary democracy and weakens the oversight and check functions of local councils. Ultimately, silencing the council members’ voices is the same as silencing the citizens' right to know and their voices."
The Daegu City Chapter of the Democratic Party stated that the rights to speak and request materials are fundamental legislative functions to monitor and keep the executive branch in check on behalf of residents, and promised to continue monitoring the situation to ensure that Kim Hyunju and Lee Chongmu can carry on their normal legislative activities.

Out of a total of seven Gunwi County Council members, there are four from the People Power Party, two from the Democratic Party, and one independent. However, the People Power Party holds all major positions, including the chair, vice chair, and two standing committee chairman roles.
