Live YouTube Webinar Scheduled for 6 p.m. on October 7
On October 7, Samsung Asset Management announced the publication of its fourth-quarter pension investment guidebook, "ETF Yeongeumsulsa (Pension Alchemist)," designed to help pension investors achieve successful long-term investing and optimize their tax-saving structures.
This guidebook was inspired by medieval alchemy, which sought to transform base metals into gold. It carries the message that the true alchemy for today’s investors is to grow substantial wealth by steadily investing small amounts over a long period. Notably, it defines the essential ingredients for successful pension alchemy not as flashy individual stocks, but as "accounts" and "ETFs." The guide emphasizes that, even with the same investment amount, the size of the final assets depends on what "container" (account) is used and how investments are allocated.
The guidebook consists of six chapters: specifically, ▲ ingredients of alchemy (account selection), ▲ attractiveness of alchemy (triple tax savings through contribution, management, and withdrawal), ▲ the alchemist's workshop (practical Q&A on pension accumulation and withdrawal), ▲ alchemy ingredients almanac (ETF basics and investment principles), ▲ the alchemist’s recipe (ETF portfolios by age group), and ▲ ingredients chosen by the alchemist (22 types of KODEX ETFs). In this way, it is structured for readers to easily understand all aspects of pension investment at a glance.
The book particularly addresses the most frequent and practical questions from investors in the field, using real-life scenarios. Topics include the recommended order of contributions for dual-income couples in the "pension accumulation phase," transferring matured ISA funds to pension accounts, and ETFs that are not eligible for investment within pension accounts.
In the "pension withdrawal phase," it explains the difference in taxes when receiving severance pay as a lump sum versus as a pension, management tips for private pensions using the 15 million won annual standard, and more. The guide also revisits popular methods such as utilizing pension savings accounts under a child’s name and donation techniques involving term deposits.
It also provides concrete portfolio recommendations tailored to each life stage. For investors in their 20s, who have a long investment horizon, it suggests a "growth" portfolio centered on major indices such as the U.S. S&P 500 with a higher allocation to AI-themed ETFs. For those in their 30s and 40s, it recommends a "balance" portfolio that continues to pursue growth while achieving balance by mixing monthly dividend payouts, asset allocation, and commodities. For investors in their 50s and beyond, when cash flow becomes more important, it suggests an "income stability" portfolio by raising the share of monthly dividend ETFs up to 40% and adding ultra-short-term bonds to suppress volatility.
Additionally, the guidebook features characteristics of 22 types of KODEX ETFs spanning six categories: representative indices, AI themes, monthly dividend, asset allocation, bonds, and commodities. The guidebook is available for free download by anyone, without registration, from Samsung Asset Management’s official website.
Dohyoung Kim, Head of ETF Consulting at Samsung Asset Management, commented, "Pension investing, whether lasting a few years or several decades, must start with building a structure to minimize taxes. It is crucial to make long-term investments in ETFs that suit your needs to benefit from time and compound growth. As the number of pension investors entering the withdrawal phase grows, their greatest concerns and the corresponding solutions have been newly reflected in this edition of the guidebook."
