Refuting Hardline Prosecution Reform within the Ruling Bloc
Clarity on Real Estate, Pro
President Lee Jae-myung used the National Foundation Day holiday to mobilize his supporters through social media, while once again making a clear distinction from the hardline calls for prosecution reform within the ruling bloc. He defended former Democratic Party leader Jeong Cheong-rae as a "comrade who struggled through the night of rebellion together," and showed strong resolve toward reclaiming pro-Japanese assets and eradicating real estate speculation. However, when faced with pushback within the greater ruling coalition over prosecution reform, he continued to use strong language, describing such stances as "the political legacy of particular individuals," "hogging achievements," and "self-interest."

View original imageDuring the National Foundation Day holiday from October 3 to 5, President Lee posted a total of 19 messages on X (formerly known as Twitter), with 11 posts made on October 5 alone. His topics ranged from promoting national achievements and rebutting internal party debates, to policy explanations on housing supply and a comprehensive farmland survey. The trend of using social media as a direct channel to explain government matters continued through the holiday, following 31 posts that were published from September 28 to October 2.
The starting point of his messaging was to solidify internal unity within the ruling bloc. When an online user criticized the dinner meeting with former leader Jeong by saying, "Please stop bothering Cheong-rae," President Lee directly replied and explained the circumstances of their meeting. He characterized Jeong as a "comrade who struggled through the night of rebellion together," and rebutted, "He wasn't dragged around by me, nor did I harass him."
President Lee's "comradeship narrative" did not extend to embracing hardline positions on prosecution reform. On October 4, he stated, "Reform is for the people and the nation—it should not be used as a means to highlight radicalism, gain attention, or attack others." Later that night, he posted, "Regardless of being left or right, at the front or rear, we must always be vigilant against irresponsible extremism anywhere," labeling those who stir up the public without basis as "irresponsible extremists," which he dubbed the "Mugeuk faction."
Although figures such as Gyeonggi Province Governor Choo Mi-ae responded in rebuttal, President Lee continued to clarify his stance on prosecution reform on October 5. He stressed, "Prosecution reform should be done for the people, not to create a political legacy for certain individuals," and warned, "No one should try to manipulate appointments or actual investigations and prosecutions for personal gain under the pretext of prosecution reform."
He also specified whom he was addressing. President Lee shared on X video clips of past remarks by author Yoo Si-min, Cho Kuk, head of the Innovation Policy Research Institute at the Cho Kuk Innovation Party, and Democratic Party lawmaker Kim Yong-min. He pointed out, "Most proponents of prosecution reform, including the Cho Kuk Innovation Party, suggested establishing a Central Investigation Agency within the Ministry of Justice and a separate agency for prosecutions," claiming that this was "a step further" than previous plans. By directly sharing past statements of ruling figures by name, Lee countered criticism that prosecution reform had regressed.
Strong Stance on Pro-Japanese Assets and Real Estate...Direct Explanations on Policy Debates
When it came to policy issues such as real estate and pro-Japanese assets, Lee used even more direct language. Early in the morning of October 5, he shared news that the government had newly reclaimed assets from descendants of pro-Japanese collaborators, stating, "We will thoroughly reclaim pro-Japanese assets, even if it means expanding manpower, budget, and organizations."
On real estate, Lee made multiple posts on October 5. He declared, "I will surely keep my promise to bring an end to the Republic of Real Estate Speculation," and diagnosed that the sharp drop in Seoul-centered permits and approvals from 2022 to 2025 would, after a time lag, lead to a decrease in supply. He identified concentration in the capital area, excessive household loans, and tax issues as medium- and long-term causes, and pledged to address these through a combination of new land development, rezoning, the relocation of public institutions and companies to the provinces, and the adjustment of taxes and loans. He also announced that the government would use excess tax revenue to provide a large supply of long-term public rental housing for youth and the middle class ahead of schedule.
Regarding housing supply, Lee said he had instructed the new Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH) to devote themselves "as if possessed" to massively increasing early supply as a matter of national destiny, even if they are unable to actually build houses. He specifically noted that, recently, housing permits had increased by about 50% compared to the same period last year, but that some sites were delaying the start of construction due to concerns over unsold units. He explained that he had directed LH to commit to purchasing these unsold units for rental, thereby mitigating the risk.
President Lee also responded directly to farmers' concerns over the comprehensive farmland survey. He made a public show of support for Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Song Mi-ryeong, stating, "The comprehensive farmland survey is just a survey—there will be no disadvantage whatsoever for those who hold farmland properly." He explained that the real issue arises when someone acquires farmland for speculation without any intention to engage in agriculture, deceiving the government and not actually cultivating the land.
Direct Promotion of Economic Recovery and Welfare Achievements

View original imageApart from political issues, President Lee also continued to highlight achievements in economic and livelihood policies. On October 3, he shared a post from Minister of Planning and Budget Park Hong-geun, describing his administration's efforts to normalize an economy that had previously been in negative growth as "urgent and now achieving considerable success." When Minister Park introduced the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development's (OECD) recent upward revision of Korea's 2026 growth rate forecast, President Lee praised him and commended the public officials for their work.
Lee also announced the amendment of a law to reduce the number of people who miss out on welfare benefits such as child allowances and parenting payments because they do not apply, despite being eligible. He stated, "We will lower the threshold for welfare so that no one misses out because they were unaware or could not apply—moving from 'welfare that must be applied for' to 'welfare proactively offered by the state.'"

He went on to thank refiners and gas stations, sharing posts highlighting that domestic oil price increases after the Middle East war were being managed to a lower level than in other major countries. He explained that this was possible because the government monitors and manages the supply price and quantity of refined oil by law, and that the oil industry cooperated with these policies.
