Three Korean Firms Among Asia-Pacific’s 'Top 10 Biopharma Deals'... Samsung BioLogics, SK Biopharmaceuticals, Hanmi Pharmaceutical
Samsung BioLogics' PolyPeptide Acquisition Ranks 6th
SK Biopharmaceuticals' Introduction of Opacalim Ranks 7th
Hanmi Pharmaceutical's Licensing Deal Ranks 9th
This year, out of the top 10 major pharmaceutical and biotech deals in the Asia-Pacific region, three deals involved Korean companies, including Samsung BioLogics, SK Biopharmaceuticals, and Hanmi Pharmaceutical.
According to the Korea Biotechnology Industry Organization (KoreaBIO) on October 5, BioPharma APAC, a media outlet specializing in biopharmaceuticals, selected the "Top 10 Influential Asia-Pacific Biopharma Deals of 2026" by evaluating the scale and symbolic significance of mergers and acquisitions (M&A) and licensing agreements involving companies in the Asia-Pacific region.
Among Korean companies, Samsung BioLogics' acquisition of PolyPeptide Group ranked sixth. BioPharma APAC highly evaluated the deal, noting that Samsung BioLogics has secured peptide contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO) capabilities and supply chains amid surging global demand for obesity and diabetes treatments.
SK Biopharmaceuticals' acquisition of rights to the novel epilepsy drug candidate “Opacalim” was ranked seventh. The company drew attention for securing U.S. assets preemptively and making a large upfront payment even before key clinical results were released.
Hanmi Pharmaceutical's licensing agreement to out-license a metabolic disease treatment candidate to Genentech, a subsidiary of the Roche Group, was ranked ninth. The upfront payment received by Hanmi Pharmaceutical alone amounts to 190 million dollars.
While it did not make the top 10, Alteogen's licensing deal with Novartis was also highlighted as a notable transaction.
