"I Couldn't Believe My Eyes": Bare Feet Suddenly Appear from Behind... In-Flight Etiquette Controversy Erupts
Video from LA-bound Flight: Passenger Invades Front Armrest with Bare Feet
"Shouldn't They Have Asked First?" Netizens Criticize Behavior
Controversy over in-flight etiquette has erupted after a photo was released showing a passenger on a long-haul flight stretching their bare feet onto the armrest of the seat in front.
On October 5, a picture taken on a flight bound for Los Angeles was posted on social media. The image shows a passenger extending their leg between the seats and placing their bare feet on the armrest in front. The fact that the passenger was seen continuously wiggling their toes was also captured, fueling further criticism online.
The person who uploaded the photo shared, "I've flown often, but this is the first time I've witnessed something like this firsthand beside me," describing the situation at the time. They continued, "I can understand stretching your legs forward because they may ache on a long flight, but why keep wiggling your toes?"
The uploader also noted that the passenger had room to extend their feet because the seat in front was empty. "While you might use the space more comfortably if the front seat is vacant, I think it's only proper to ask for understanding from those seated nearby before putting your feet up," the uploader pointed out.

After the picture was released, online users pointed out hygiene issues and the invasion of personal space. Comments such as "That's dirty," and "How did you tolerate that?" followed, with many agreeing that placing any part of your body in another passenger's seat area is inappropriate.
There have been previous incidents where controversy was stirred by passengers encroaching on others' seating space on planes. Common examples include a front passenger reclining their seat excessively, a rear passenger pushing the seat with their feet and disrupting others, or stretching legs between seats.
In particular, the act of taking off one’s shoes and stretching or inserting bare feet toward the seat in front has been a recurring problem on long-haul flights both domestically and internationally.
