The purpose of the agreement is to link Gyeongsangbuk-do's industrial and technological capabilities with Utah's innovation ecosystem. Gyeongsangbuk-do Province will connect Utah's industrial and investment ecosystem with the region's own manufacturing and industrial base to support local companies entering the U.S. market and building local networks. The agreement will also expand opportunities for cooperation in future industries such as AI, semiconductors, and advanced sectors, as well as exchanges and investment partnerships between companies.
Attending the University of Utah agreement were University President Taylor R. Randall and Vice President for Research Partnership Anshuman Razdan, among others. Both sides agreed to pursue global network development for local startups and innovative companies entering the U.S. market, support for company growth, technology commercialization, and joint research.
Gyeongsangbuk-do Province will utilize the University of Utah's research and industry network and entrepreneurship support infrastructure to connect regional companies with local U.S. businesses, investors, and startup support organizations. Company matching, identification of joint projects, and connections among technology commercialization and investment will also be conducted. The province plans to establish the "Gyeongbuk-Utah Global Open Innovation Hub" as a collaboration platform to help local companies achieve global expansion by connecting Gyeongsangbuk-do companies with universities, research institutes, and enterprises in Utah.
The Gyeongsangbuk-do delegation visited the University of Utah's nanofab to observe research and technology development in semiconductors and nanotechnology. The nanofab serves as a research infrastructure supporting R&D and prototype creation in semiconductors and nanotechnologies, equipped with a cleanroom and advanced research and process equipment. The delegation learned about the main research facilities, current operational status, and support systems for research and technology commercialization, and examined examples in which the university's research resources are linked with companies and research institutes for technology development and commercialization.
Gyeongsangbuk-do Province plans to develop cooperation with the Utah state government and the University of Utah into a global cooperation system, connecting state government, university, and companies. The province will establish a working-level committee to identify actionable projects from the agreement and promote follow-up initiatives by expanding exchanges among companies, universities, and research institutions.
