"Now Safe Indoors and Outdoors"...$3.8 Million Invested in Innovative 'Mosquito Repellent Device'
Capable of distinguishing mosquitoes from other insects such as butterflies
Available in two versions: indoor and outdoor
A Chinese startup has developed a device that uses lasers to repel mosquitoes and is preparing to launch it soon.
According to the South China Morning Post (SCMP) and other media outlets, on October 2 (local time), Photon Matrix Lab, a startup based in Changzhou, Jiangsu Province, China, has developed a device that detects mosquitoes using LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) technology and eliminates them with a laser. The company is currently accepting pre-orders from customers.
According to the company, the device uses high-precision LiDAR to scan the surroundings in real time, instantly detecting the location of mosquitoes and adjusting the laser's angle to repel them. Notably, it has the ability to distinguish mosquitoes from other insects such as butterflies, thus preventing indiscriminate targeting. It can also identify humans or large animals in advance and immediately stops operating if they come within a certain range.
SCMP noted, "Although the technology of capturing mosquitoes with lasers has been proven in laboratories over several years, it remained only at the stage of research papers or prototype models."
The company previously raised funds on a U.S. crowdfunding platform, setting a goal of $20,000 (about 27.16 million won), but the campaign went viral online and the amount raised surpassed $2.8 million (about 3.8 billion won). However, due to delays in mass production and safety concerns, it took three years to launch the product—contrary to the initial estimate of only three months for development and release.
A company representative explained, "Compared to the technology of using lasers to catch mosquitoes, it was more challenging to adjust detection accuracy, attack precision, costs, and manufacturing methods," adding, "The launch was delayed due to safety verification and the process of establishing the supply chain and manufacturing process."
The product will be released in two versions: an indoor model and an outdoor model. The outdoor model is equipped with a visible blue laser, making it suitable for open-air environments such as terraces or campsites. The price is $1,088 (about 1.47 million won). The indoor model uses an infrared laser that does not cause eye discomfort, allowing for safe usage in enclosed spaces, and is priced at $988 (about 1.34 million won).
